Emilie Darroman: Intern for Harry Miller Corp
Released: Wednesday, October 28, 2010
Harry Miller Corp recently hosted Emilie Darroman, a French Exchange student through the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE). Ms. Darroman, a fourth year graduate student at the National Graduate School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering in Montpellier, France, recently completed a four-month internship at HMC’s Philadelphia laboratory.
Ms. Darroman’s academic concentration on the synthesis and characterization of polymers and ceramics was furthered by the opportunity to perform quality control testing, formula revision projects and raw material substitution and evaluation under the Supervision of Nick Ariano, Vice President and Technical Director of Harry Miller Corp.
“Emilie quickly acquired proficiency levels in the QC process and we allotted time for her to work in the product development area.” said Ariano, “She served as an assistant to chemists on development projects, including a few projects where alternative components in existing product formulas were under evaluation.”
The cross cultural benefits are attractive and beneficial to hosting US businesses as well as the exchange students. Europe is often ahead of US-based companies in areas such as “green technology” and working with students who are particularly tuned into these types of developmental subsets can vault production and the attractiveness of US companies to international clients.
“An exchange student can learn our culture and values by immersion, while exposure to a foreign student opens the minds of our own staff to different thought-patterns, problem solving approaches and experiences,” said Harry Miller Corp President, Bruce K. Entwisle. “We want to encourage students to enter ‘rust belt’ industries because those industries are not seen as sleek or ‘sexy’ as more high tech fields. But, innovation is innovation and experiencing that will capture and inspire the student and get them excited about other possibilities in our industry for future innovative developments. We enjoy being a part of making that happen and we enjoyed the opportunity to host Emilie.”
Ms. Darroman worked with the staff from June until the end of September, 2010 when she returned to her studies in France. She reports that her internship presentation went well and that many of her friends and family were curious about her American experience and she says she enjoyed sharing “my amazing stay” with them. The staff at Harry Miller Corp is following her educational progress and keeping her up-to-date on the local events (including her interest in the progress of the Phillies in this year’s National League Championships).
Harry Miller Corp and CJ Haas Company Reunite
Released: Tuesday, February 09, 2010
After a parting of the ways over 60 years ago, Harry Miller Corp and The CJ Haas Company have “re-united” as the Harry Miller Corp. announces the purchase of the metalworking products portion of Haas TCM, formerly known as AEI, LLC. This acquisition effectively rejoins the original segments of the company which incorporated in January 1936 and split into two companies ten years later.
Founders Harry L. Miller and Charles J. Haas were originally employees of Quaker Chemical and Houghton Int’l before forming the Haas-Miller Corporation in 1936 to meet the specialty chemical needs of the textile, leather and paper trades. With the onset of WWII, much of the manufacturing base in Philadelphia turned to the steel and metalworking industries (as did much of the country) and Haas-Miller pivoted to meet those industrial needs both locally and in regions to the north and the Midwest.
In 1946, when Haas-Miller disbanded, the Harry Miller Corporation remained at the original 4th and Bristol Street location in North Philadelphia. The CJ Haas Company was established on American Street, also in north Philadelphia and was later renamed “Haas TCM” to reflect its modern emphasis on total chemical management. The metalworking portion of the original company was continued under the umbrella of AEI, LLC, a subsidiary of Haas TCM. Over the years, both specialty chemical companies competed for the business in metalworking shops and steel mills.
Despite the differences in the way the companies developed products and customer markets, there were some remarkable similarities between the two companies. John S. Entwisle succeeded his father in law to run Harry Miller Corp and John was followed by his son, Bruce K. Entwisle. Jack Fortin (formerly of Quaker Chemical) bought the Haas Corporation from CJ Haas in 1975 and was succeeded by his son, Thad Fortin, in 1997. Both continue as their respective company’s CEO.
“Thad and I knew each other casually over the years and we maintained an intermittent dialogue. In the second quarter of 2009, as our respective needs changed, we started talking conceptually about an acquisition of a portion of Thad’s business,” said Harry Miller President, Bruce Entwisle.
“In short, it appeared to be a “win/win” proposition. Thad’s team meshed well with our management group and the transfer was about as “seamless” as one could hope, given the fact that they were discontinuing production and both parties had to maintain a vibrant customer base.”
“Trust was paramount in getting the deal done and I think it worked out well for all 3 parties: Harry Miller Corp., Haas TCM and the customer base!”
Harry Miller Corp now owns Haas’ chemical product client list, formulations and trade names while Haas TCM will concentrate their offerings on total chemical management services.

Harry Miller Corp Launches Triazine-Free Synthetic Metalworking Coolant
Released: Sunday, July 09, 2006
(Philadelphia, PA) July 9, 2006 – Harry Miller Corporation has announced a new product that addresses recent supply shortage issues and the latest health concerns by incorporating new easy-to-obtain components and eliminating triazine biocides in their Hamikleer© 1995 coolant product.
“This product is a new formulation, involving several new materials,” said Vice President and Technical Director, Nick Ariano. “And these materials will not be subject to limitation of supply in the present environment of supply shortages.”
Formulated for moderate to heavy-duty machining applications, Hamikleer© 1995 is ultra-low foam, provides elevated bacterial resistance, offers corrosion protection for ferrous/non-ferrous metals in metalworking applications — all without an oily residue.
“This new biocide formulation effectively thwarts the growth of mycobacteria, a hard-walled bacterium identified as a potential agent in industrial HP pneumonitis cases.” Said Harry Miller Corp’s President, Bruce Entwisle. “We take our customer’s health seriously and this is another step Harry Miller Corp has taken to help protect the work environment for industrial employees.”
Extremely low foaming, Hamikleer© 1995 is particularly well-suited to high-speed, high-pressure operations employed by the newer CNC machines. It can also be used in double disc grinding, plunge grinding and surface grinding applications. As an ultra-clean synthetic, Hamikleer© 1995 may also be introduced into difficult applications like drilling and tapping alloys where cleanliness is essential.

Coolant offers High Performance, Low Environmental Impact for Metalworking Industry
Released: Friday, June 17, 2005
Harry Miller Corp. (www.HarryMillerCorp.com) announces Kleerkut 4900, a semi-synthetic coolant specially designed for industrial machining and grinding of high-temperature alloys, stainless steel and titanium. Kleerkut 4900 minimizes environmental impact in three ways: increasing the longevity of the coolant through bacterial resistance, reducing the need for additional chemical additives, and lowering the volume of industrial chemical waste.
One early adopter says coolant costs have been significantly reduced since the introduction of Kleerkut 4900 into their factory. Operators in this facility report that they appreciate the cleanliness of their workplace and the pleasant smell of the Kleerkut 4900. This product is now used in every machine in the plant and, in conjunction with an on-site reclamation unit, there is zero waste discharge.
Mike Naftzinger, Operations Manager of Shalmet Corp., reports that the product promotes carbide tool life in Shalmet’s stainless steel processing operation which machines and grinds a variety of high-temperature alloys and 300-400 grade stainless steel. He said, “My department uses Kleerkut 4900 in the wire shavers and centerless grinders. The product has solved a number of problems I was experiencing in the shop. First of all, we have had it in our centerless grinders since September, and haven’t once had to add biocide for bacterial control. Our previous coolant was consuming as much as five gallons every other week, and our operators were continually complaining about the odor. Secondly, the coolant provides a very dry “cake” on our filter paper, which is easier from a waste-treatment perspective, as well as the fact we know particulate is not carrying back to the header and causing scratches on our bars.”
Harry Miller Corp.’s Vice President and Technical Director, Nick Ariano, states that Kleerkut 4900 is a semi-synthetic metalworking lubricant that can be utilized in turning, milling, grinding, shaving and straightening operations. It provides lubrication for all steel grades, including stainless, hardened alloys, titanium alloys, and cast iron. Kleerkut 4900 can be used on aluminum or other non-ferrous metals such as copper, brass or bronze. Ariano said, “Kleerkut 4900 exhibits superior lubrication and die life in high speed turning or cutting processes. It is a low foaming lubricant, offers exceptional resistance to microbial degradation and is compatible with central systems utilizing filtration.”
According to Harry Miller Corp.’s President, Bruce Entwisle, “Our laboratory development team and field representatives work with our clients to provide solutions for any manufacturing difficulties they may have. Kleerkut is another example of our mission to develop the best custom chemicals to serve the specific needs of each of our clients in the metalworking industry. Kleerkut 4900 utilizes the latest technologies in corrosion resistance and combines them with specialty esters to promote good tool wear, resist misting, eliminate excessive additives, and reduce overall waste.”
